What are fruit flies?

These common gnats are usually invading your home/business in the late summer and early fall. They are attracted to any fruits or vegetables that have been left out and have started to ferment. Fruit flies have red eyes, are 3 to 4mm long and have a brown colored body.

How did you get fruit flies?

The pesky flies can come in through open doors or windows. Fruit flies can also make their way into your home on fruit or vegetables from your garden or from unrefrigerated fruit and vegetables from the store. They are attracted to produce, garbage cans, and garbage disposals. Basically, they love any sweet or stinky areas. They will breed in trash cans, empty bottles or cans, garbage disposals, drains, sponges, and any fruit or vegetables that have been left out. They can produce up to 500 eggs in their life cycle and will go from an egg to an adult in about a week.

How do I get rid of fruit flies?

The best way to get rid of fruit flies is to start by preventing them. Make sure all of your fruits and vegetables have been eaten, thrown away or put in the refrigerator. Any damaged produce should be discarded or cut away. This will keep any eggs or larvae in the damage area from hatching or emerging.

If you notice you have fruit flies, you will need to make sure all potential breeding areas are cleaned or removed. Insecticides will only treat the adult fruit flies. You will need to figure out what’s attracting them and where they are breeding. Once these areas have been cleaned or removed, you can put out an attractant for the adult fruit flies or spray them with an aerosol insecticide.
